His chin is often berated but its nonsense. While Mike Tyson, for example, may have had a strong chin for absorbing a single blow, Louis fought better when hurt and showed better recuperative ability than either Tyson or Lennox Lewis, neither of whom ever won a fight they went down in. Louis was knocked out of the ring by Buddy Baer in their first fight but calmly climbed back in like nothing happened and immediately took control of the fight. The ability to come back when hurt is the sign of a great fighter. Louis demonstrated that he had toughness and durability. Except for the first Schmeling match when he was young, overconfident and under trained Louis was never closed to being stopped in any of the fights he went down in, retiring as champion with a 60-1 record (51 ko’s) before making an ill-advised comeback. Louis could take a strong punch, had proven staying power and the ability to come from behind and win which is what greatness is all about.

No .. going down against almost every one including much smaller men is not a sign of bad chin .. , it is just a sign of a lion's heart .
McCall and Tua could have done much better if they just went down every time they had a problem .
And this is why Vitali is not great , he should have went down against Lewis and Byrd , this way , after getting up he would have been remembered as an iron champion with a lion's heart . Failing to fall was his problem , that's why most "experts" (not including fighters) are considering Wladimir as the better brother , because he knows how to go down and then up , but he comes nowhere close to Louis in this aspect which is why Louis is remembered as the greater fighter. Also Patterson > Liston and Ali , especially Ali.

Greatness is all about being behind on the scorecards , getting knocked down and rising and sometimes getting KOd. These are the materials which true champions are made from , not those paper chumps in a multititle world whom just refuse to go down . True champions must wipe the deck with their butts on a regular basis , falling flat on the back is even better and going down face first is the best , the champion's way of going out on his shield .

What's this? Monte Cox still sucking Joe Louis' ****? Louis was a great fighter, but his chin was pretty shaky. You don't need a phenomenal chin, though, to be an ATG.
