  • When did these fighters become past prime

    Eubank
    Nunn
    Benn
    Toney
    Calzaghe

Eubank was 1995, his last prime performance was Wharton 1994.

Benn would be anytime after the McClellan fight in 1995.

For Toney I'd argue 1993/94 before the Jones fight, in pound for pound terms. Not that he wasn't masterful at heavyweight up till a few years ago. His heavyweight prime came against Holyfield for me.

Calzaghe was anytime post Kessler. He was still good but a touch on the slide for Jones and Hopkins.

I'll have a think about Nunn.

I would argue that he was basically shot by then, someone here said he was already past prime by the time of the McClellan fight.

        Hi again,

Yea, you'll like the Eubank Wharton fight. Chris was like Ray Leonard that night!

As for Benn, against McClellan he showed every quality. For me it was his best performance, his hooks were devastatingly accurate, his stamina, will to win and heart were prime. Granted, the middleweight pre Eubank 1 Benn was faster and possibly a touch better at slipping punches. I guess it could be argued that Benn post Eubank 1 was post prime, but he did have some good really good nights at super middle.

As for Toney, yep.....the light heavyweight period. It could be argued that weight problems were more the issue than being post prime or shot in the conventional sense. His skills were of course with us till fairly recently.

Im downloading it off youtube as we speak. I was shocked to see how much eubank slowed down from the first Watson fight to the Collins I fight.

All great fighters tend to have at least one great fight left in them when they are past prime, I think the McClellan fight was Benn last big performance

Toney has to be one of the most talented fighters Ive ever watch especially at smw. Its a shame that he threw so many of his years away.Look at him now fat ans seriously slurring his words

I agree about being faster, but Benn was alot better technically after the first Eubank fight. His upper body movement improved tremendously following that fight and he picked his shots and fought at a more steady pace than the old 'Dark Destroyer'.

Eubank had alot more difficulty in landing clean against Benn in the rematch than he did the first time around.

I agree that the McClellan fight was his greatest.Benn has never shown himself as durable, and as complete a fighter as he did against McClellan. He absorbed alot, but also evaded alot of McClellan's shots to get to him.It was like a mixture of the old Benn and the new Benn that night.

              Agreed Prinze.

And Hi again LightsOut, Toney was a legendary technician. One of the best to ever lace up the gloves.....a real throwback. His only real limitations were his discipline regarding his weight and the fact that even now, he is fighting on too long as a shadow of his former self.

I think his fighting to try to make up for all of the lost time, which he cant. As for the eating thing, I dont understand how he could allow it to derail his career the way he did.

                off topic:
Why dont you ever use the Reply option?

Ha ha, because I've got so used to pressing the 'post reply' function further down. I'm guessing the 'reply' function triggers the quote function. Thanks for the tip, I'm no IT whizz........just a boxing geek!!

As for Toney, I guess there was a lot of temptation for a wealthy world class athlete......and not just food! Its hard to live the most perfecly clean life that is required by a boxer when you are rich and have all the natural talent a man could be blessed with.
