Georges Carpentier

In my opinion, Carpentier was a great fighter,... he fought in every single division,.. and gave a good account of himself,... a bit similar in his career up to a point, to Les Darcy in that Georges started very very young. He was encouraged from the very start at his career by those around him, who recognised that this kid was one out of the box. At that young age, he was recognised as special in a country which up until that time, had never produced a top quality fighter, it is said that he had fought for some kind of title from Flyweight to Heavyweight, everybody knows the Dempsey fight, but are not very conversant with his earlier exploits. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Carpentier really started to hit his straps as a WW,... by that time the greatest fighter in Europe,,,,,,,, apart from maybe,.. the UK, his victories that survive on film like the Kid Lewis one, show that this guy was very tough, fast and a very big puncher..... His fight against Tunney however shows a fighter on the way out. I think he may have been better at MW than against a bigger Tunney even if he fought Gene at his prime,,... Tunney was just too big and TOUGH and young. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Where does he stand among the pre- 20's -(to 00 ) Middleweights ????/...... It's hard to say for sure,... but I don't give him too much chance of Georges Carpentier in a fight with Les Darcy (at either MW or Light HW).... I see that as a preview for the Tunney Fight,..... He does NOT KO or knocks-down Darcy at any stage,, Darcy matches him for speed, is even tougher, hits harder and has a superior chin,... and last of all is that great raech of Darcy's,...... and those Mitts of his........... Probably the biggest pair of fists in MW history,......... Maybe that was why he could hurt them so bad,.... ---------------------------------------Anyway, this is about GC........ obviously, I don't think he was the BEST..... but at MW,,,,, he is top 10 for 1900 to 25,.... and Top 5 LHW from 1900 to 1930..... easy.

He hit Ted Kid Lewis dirty after the bell. I was so happy when Dempsey cleaned his clock.
Good fighter though, at a time when boxing matches were put together dramatically. The French Navy hero vs the AWOL American.

I think Carpentier was normally a bit cleaner than Ted was,...... read the account of one of the Lewis Vs Jack Britton fights............ I found two newspaper reports on the net a couple of weeks ago, and by all reports Lewis was VERY unpopular with the audience.
