  • Which fighters influenced your favourite fighters?

    For example:
Toney-uses the defense of George Benton and some of his head movements I think are from Walcott

Eubank-sometimes I think his style of fighting off the back foot and pulling his head back are similar to Ali's style

    Mayweather-Defense:Locche, Benton

Benn-he bobbed and weaved like Frazier

Can anyone think of fighters who may have influenced Hopkins and Jones?

Tyson took more than few chapters from Jack Dempsey's book. Dempsey and Tyson had superb footwork and it was very similar among many other things.

Joe Frazier took his style from Henry Armstrong in setting a quick pace and fighting inside.

Pacquiao reminds me a bit of Roberto Duran.

I think Ray Leonard may have been an influence on Roy Jones Jr.

Bernard Hopkins perhaps took a few notes from Carlos Monzon.

Im still reading that book, its a great book. Havent seen much of Dempsey so I cant really comment on this. I would say that Tyson was clearly influenced by Patterson and Torres due to the Damato connection.

off topic:The sad thing is that Tyson and Patterson also had parallel lives and careers, before King stepped in

He does use the classic stance like those guys, and rolls his shoulders to deflect right hands, but what about his use of footwork, did any of those guys you listed use similar moves?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's seen that resemblence.....I made a comment on that last year and people thought I was crazy.

In what way? Jones seems to have his own unique style. I can kind of see some Ali influence in the way he would lean back to avoid punches, but thats about it.

Not familiar with Monzoon, what notes are you thinking of?

I'd say Hopkins got a lot of his footwork from Walcott from what I've seen.

The Walcott fights I've seen are Marciano, Louis I and II. I guess im going to have to watch them again and try to see moves which Hopkins uses.
