Rid**** Bowe - How good was he

Skill wise he's up there, he had a great jab, the best heavy weight uppercut I've ever seen, he was decent at all ranges but was most comfortable at mid where he could brawl the opponent and because of his size speed and power he often won. For my money he's the most skilled "big man" there's ever been.
He was a good amateur and when he turned pro Eddie Futch turned him into an animal, but as Eddie says at the start of that video that he had the potential to be the greatest he trained, shame that Bowe couldn't stay out of the fridge and wasn't as disciplined as he could of been.
If he stayed in the shape he did in 91/92 and didn't become punch drunk so quickly I don't see any heavy of the 90s beating him. Jmo.Last edited by NChristo; 08-26-2010, 02:58 AM.

If he had any discipline whatsoever, he probably would have dominated the 90's and been every bit as important to the era as Lennox Lewis and Holyfield.

He turned into one of the more overrated heavyweights imo.
Most people forget that he had some of the worst defense you'd see at his level. You can't be one of the greats being that one dimensional against others who had both the offensive and defensive skillset as well.
He was so open to right hands it was insulting. That's why a former Cruiserweight was able to go toe to toe with him for 3 fights. Think of Lennox Lewis going at him and his right hands connecting instead of Holyfield's. And although he was past his best against Andrew Golota, something tells me it wouldn't have been that much diffirent if he wasn't, because Bowe was getting tagged even by some of the worst journeymen.
So yes, a fantastic offensive fighter who would find his downfall more often than not because of his lack of defense. And I didn't even go into his mental game. This is just the truth imo, I'm a big fan of him and I even made a highlight of him as well.

bowe's biggest problem was his willpower, to be honest i only think he was ever in peak condition for that first fight against holyfield.
It would have been interesting if the Lewis fight had actually happened straight after that one. I think that version of Bowe would have given Lewis a real tough fight

top class only beaten once, beat a peak firing on all cylinders holyfield,he would of taxed lewis ass back in the day had they got it on early 90s shame the guy couldnt leave the fridge alone and stopped training hard, holyfield 1 was the end of both fighters peaks, mentaly bowe was tough and never quit trying in the ring out of it well........thats another story.

When he was coming up with Eddie Futch, who I always had tremendous respect for, it sure seemed Bowe had all it takes to go very far. Unfortunitely he seemed a bit lazy which resulted in his being overweight and not always in the best shape.
On a side note, I always felt Rock Newman and the thugs that surrounded him hurt his career alot too.
