He was exciting but not on the level of:

      Arturo Gatti
      Naseem Hamed
      Lennox Lewis
      Tito Trinidad
      Kostya Tszyu
      Julio Cesar Chaves
      Chris Eubank

        Battling Nelson.

He was arguably the most popular fighter at all in his era. I would think the only rival he had was HW James Jeffries.

In terms of popularity he's one of the top.

Who else draws 30k+ people over 5000 miles to watch him get KTFO?

its gotta be between duran and jcc. try to imagine some of your non-boxing fan friends and ask who among non-american greats they know and it surely will be one of those two only.

I can't speak for Europe much but I know that CARPENTIER was a hero everywhere, Benny Lynch is a Scottish Hero and EXITING, Marcel Cerdan was ADORED in France ( I think he is vastly underrated ),.............................. ,.......... In The Teens Les Darcy was very big, when he arrived in New York, he was mobbed by several thousands, it's been said that no other pugilist from a foreign land had ever received in the U.S. ( I haven't got much data on most others ), the U.S. boxing fraternity was in Darcy fever, he was a Hero in Ireland and is still a national Australian Icon. Kostya Tszyu, Vic Darchinyan, Jeff Harding, Jeff Fenech, Lionel Rose ( but Not with Mexicans ) and Michael Katsides have had a lot of admirers.
