If he fought the exact same way without adapting at all he would lose to top opposition plain and simple. Don't you think you're exaggerating a bit? His head movement would be inferior because guys back then utilized the clinch constantly with no penalty, it was the bread and butter of any defensive fighter (which he absolutely was not so it's a moot point in any case).

Yes, there are advantages to the waist-level guard - under the rules and with the gloves of the time, otherwise you would still see everyone employing it (it was largely a holdover from bareknuckle to be quite frank under whose rules it was much more sensible). He was able win against such larger men because A. he was a superlative athlete for the time and B. the average athleticism of opposition was lower. I'm not saying if you took his talent and body and had him utilize modern training techniques he couldn't compete, but it was literally a different sport back then based strongly on endurance and toughness over technique.
If anything the larger gloves would mean he could be slightly lazier blocking.

its not that he would actually be faster then ali its that his stance placing almost 100% of your weight on your back foot allows for almost instantaneous movement. Try it. put all your weight on your back foot then sit into it and see how quickly you can piviot sidestep move and with the weight being fruther back you can keep your head and body fruther back with out being off balance which leads to more time, alot more time to see something comeing. while he was not faster then louis at blocking how he used his stance gave him the time to react just as well as louis would react.

keeping his hands up i think would be a big problem again modern day combos which i think it the only reason for the change of the low held guard. his only choice would be to retreat or clinch but for the rest of the time it would work well doing exactly what he wanted to do lure em in, retreat his head while blocking and countering.

    Fitz vs Corbett decent quality.
