1976 Wide World 0f Sports boxing special w/Muhammad Ali & cosell

Muhammad Ali analysis Heavyweight ATG's of the past:

There are six parts in total, but I can't embed them all, just look at the list of videos on the side and you can select subsequent parts.

Well what do you think of Ali's analysis?

Entertaining to watch, although his analysis is pretty biased or perhaps simply uninformed in some cases (who knows how many fights of some of these older guys he ever even saw) - nevertheless, I do agree with him on some points in regard to the tendency to overrate their skill levels (Nat Fleischer being the prime example of this). Incidentally, it's interesting to note that the champions he rates the highest are the ones that immediately led up to his reign: Walcott, Charles, and Marciano (the latter probably because he had met him and faced him in mock exhibitions, so he had respect for his ability).

He had great respect for Marciano because that's who was the champ when he was growing up.

I've seen these videos a couple of times and they ALWAYS get taken down.

Actually I don't think he rated Marciano at all until he saw him in action live. Growing up all his respect was reserved for SRR.

Interesting to note that Ali referred to Gene Tunney as the Greatest Fighter of his Era. Greater than Dempsey....

yet Gene Tunney who died in 1978 at the tail-end of the career of Muhammad Ali claimed right up to his final days that Jack Dempsey was the greatest fighter who ever lived and that he would have beaten Muhammad Ali and every other heavyweight champion.

Dempsey was a close friend who really helped him out lending his name and fame for Tunney's political campaigns, so it should come as little surprise. Ali ranked Tunney higher simply because, with the exception of Marciano, he rated champions solely on boxing technique.
