  • Question about the Ring Belt

Does anyone know why The Ring wasn't giving out belts in the 90's and early 2000's? I guess recognizing champs during that period

I am sure RJJR got a ring belt at LHW in the 90's.

"Ever looking upward, Jones scored a 12-round unanimous decision over Mike McCallum to win the interim WBC light heavyweight championship. Before he was done sowing havoc among the 175-pounders, Jones put the division tidily under one flag (WBC, WBA and IBF). He also won recognition as world light heavyweight champion by The Ring. In his wake, he left eleven challengers bent and bloodied. " from boxrec.com

You might be right. All I know is Kalamby was the Ring Champ at 160 after he beat McCallum. But Nunn wasn't a champ after beating him. The same goes for Toney after beating Nunn. I don't think Tito was after beating Hoya

The Ring Magazine is owned by Oscar Delahoya (GBP)

The only belt Ring Magazine awarded prior to the early 2000s was their P4P belt. The current policy of establishing division championships and awarding belts for them only came into being in the early to mid 2000s. Prior to the late 1980s they DID have a policy of acknowledging division champs but they didn't award belts for it nor did they have a formula in place for determining the champion. The champion was a product of the concensus the Ring staff as to who the best fighter in the division was rather than a set formula.

When they began to recognize champs again. I don't believe GBP owned the ring at that time

Another example is Donald Curry was the Champ. He lost to Honeygan who lost to Vaca. He beat Vaca in the rematch. Lost the Ring Belt to Marlon Starling. Who lost to Maurice Blocker. But Blocker wasn't considered a Ring Champ. He lost to Simon Brown. Who lost to Buddy McGirt. Who lost to Pernell Whitaker. Who lost to Hoya

The recongnized champ after Starling was Vernon Forrest when he beat Mosley

The Ring also went out of business in mid 1991-it is why they only had a few awards that year. London Publishing(which owned KO Magazine) brought it back towards the end of 1991, early 1992. They continued the policy of no world champions until the early 2000's.
