It was an incredible come-from-behind win, but the fact that it fell to that is more telling that it wasn't the best performance. I may actually go with Foreman-Briggs because he was what, 48 at the time? Absolutely insane.

No he didn't dominate him or anything, but he should have gotten a standard win on points. It's more the age of the respective fighters that's incredible, and Briggs was no bum (nor great).

If we're talking about the performance I was most personally impressed with it's Hopkins-Pavlik, which I saw live so it had a special quality. But it appears as if even Hopkins has finally started his final decline, and he is still several years younger than Foreman was.

Bob Fitzsimmons winning the light heavyweight title at 40 years of age against George Gardner is another deserving mention.

I'd go with Moore-Durelle II as the most competent performance I've seen from a man in his mid 40's, along with Hopkins-Pavlik of course. Moore also drew with future champion Willie Pastrano when he was nearly 50, and according to newspapers deserved to win the bout.

Yeah Foreman was less than 2 months shy of his 49th birthday against the 22 year younger Briggs in what was a clear win over a future title holder. Looks like they were grooming Briggs for a shot at Lennox Lewis and thought George should hang em up.

Some good ones mentioned, of which I think the 43 year old Hopkins complete 12 round domination of an undefeated Kelly Pavlik stands out. And yeah, it does only seems to be the higher weights where boxers are still able to remain world class past 40. Speed and reflexes being more necessary at the lighter weights, not just power.
