I think Patterson might have been boxing a little bit longer but I agree, he was still pretty crude when he was in the Olympics.
Patterson is one of my favorite fighters of all-time, I used to train with the guy that ran his gym during the later years upstate.
Patterson had good speed and underrated power but of course his chin was weak and maybe his mind a little also. One of my favorite books of all time is his autobiography "Victory Over Myself" which is one of the most incredibly introspective, candid self accounts of a pro boxer. He is as open and honest in it as Mike Tyson in the documentary Tyson.
Patterson was a guy that was easy to root for, I loved watching him. He was knocked down by the Gold medalist pro debuter Rademacher, though I don't think they called it.

I think it was 3 years. Patterson was amateurish even during the early part of his pro career, throwing punches with his feet off the canvas, but he was incredibly talented and could get away with the occasional mistake. By the end of his pro career he had settled down and turned into a fine boxer, outpointing stronger fighters like Chuvalo & Bonavena, although he wasn't physically quite as overwhelming as he had been in his earlier days when he had the speed of a lightweight and the power of a heavyweight. London described him the fastest thing on two feet after their fight.
I don't think he would have suffered from any chin problems against light heavyweights (no man less than 190 lbs ever knocked him down) but he was especially vulnerable in the early rounds against heavyweight punchers, although he managed to get up and win more often than not. Patterson was actually never knocked down after round 4 I believe.
