  • Should Gene Tunney be ranked ahead of Dempsey P4P?

First off, as a Heavyweight I believe Dempsey gets the nod over Gene for his body of work in that weight class. Not even close.

But p4p is a different story.

These guys were basically the same age, with close to the same number of fights.

As an atg LHW who beat an atg HW head to head, I dont see how Gene still comes up short on a lot of peoples p4p?

I think Gene has a very good case, for being ranked higher than Dempsey P4P!

maybe because he got his ass kicked by a middleweight, barley beat a guy 3 years out of retirement, one controversally, and defended the title once???

For one, it wasn't retirement. He was reigning Champion the entire time. He was not stripped.

For another, Dempsey got his ass kicked by the same Middleweight in sparring. His manager, Kearns, kicked that Middleweight out of camp and refused to ever let Dempsey fight him for the title, despite the fact that the same Middleweight was whipping every other top rated HW around, bar a few negro exceptions and Fred Fulton (whom he simply didn't fight, period).

I think beating Heavyweight Dempsey balances out what happened with Greb.

Other than that, Gene Tunneys record is perfect, while Dempsey had losses to Meehan and Fireman Flynn.

People may downplay Greb as a win for Tunney but he beat many of Dempsey's best opponents.

The more I learn about Dempsey the more ?'s pop up in my head about his legacy. Meanwhile my respect for Greb is shooting through the roof. Possibly the most gangster little-guy of all time.
