  • Evander Holyfield vs Michael Spinks

who should rank higher in ATG rankings and why?
who would've won if they fought at 190 and why?

  • #2
holyfield ranks higher...5 times world champion and only 4 time heavyweight champion

if holy and spinks fought i think....

holy on points , workrate alone wins this fight for him , he was a beast at 190 , combinations , speed and the jab would be too much

    10-5 in rounds if a 15 rounder

    9-3 in rounds if a 12 rounder

Holyfield would have beaten Spinks anywhere above 175. Holyfield was a harder puncher than given credit for and he could have beaten Spinks in so many different ways. Contrary to what some people believe, Spinks was not a great heavyweight. Other than beating past prime Holmes(I thought he lost the second), he did very little to prove his worth there. Holyfield, on the other hand, proved a lot at heavyweight. I do think Spinks is one of the greatest light heavyweights in history but at heavyweight it's another story.

When your an ATG Light Heavyweight and you gave 1 great Heavyweight win, you're automatically proven at HW. If anyone deserves a benefit of a doubt for anything, such a fighter meets that criteria.

Holyfield might have earned a higher ranking due to rewinning the heavyweight title. Both have their strong accomplishments.

Holyfield is the greatest cruiser of all time and had a solid run as a HW. Depening on who you ask he beat 7 guys who deserve IBHOF induction consideration as Qawi, Deleon,Holmes, Foreman, Moorer, Bowe, and Tyson.
Holmes and Foreman were past their prime but were not shot as some say they were. Holyfield is higher than Spinks P4P.

The reason Spinks beat Holmes the first fight was that Holmes didn't take the fight to Spinks aggresively and loss many of the early rounds. Obvously, he loss a bit out of his legs and the snap of his jab was not as great as before. But Holmes still won the 2nd fight until the judges took it away.

Holyfield would be on top of Spinks and win the fight due to sheer activity. Spinks wouldn't be able to do much dent on Holyfield's great chin and ring dexterity. It would be a 116-112 UD, but at LHW that would be very close. Holyfield moved up in weight and we never that great fight at LHW.

Beating a 36 year old past prime Holmes does not prove Spinks could beat a prime Evander Holyfield at heavyweight. Other than that fight Soinks proved very little at heavyweight and certainly never beat any other top heavyweights.
