  • The greater Leonard?

Since I am unable to defend myself in another thread (due to a particularly childish and rather cowardly poster having me on ignore,) I would like to pose a question that led to the creation of that thread.

Ray Leonard is a great fighter, without question. I just don't believe that his career had the longevity to warrant top 15 ATG. With a total of only 40 fights, the last 3 of which were fairly meaningless, I believe there are at least 15 greater fighters, Benny Leonard being one of them.

    Any thoughts?

Longevity might have been the only issue with Leonard, because of his constant retirements and slips into depression even when he won his biggest fights. But in this case, I think it is more quality over quantity. Leonard had an illustrious career.

Top 20 ATGs did not "retire" to avoid rematches.

I rate Leonard higher. He beat more world champions and, even though he didn't win titles in as many divisions, he reigned as champion for a longer period of time.

SRL's great wins were Benitez, Duran, Hearns & Hagler. With all due respect how does that even begin to compare with SRR? Both had great names - SRL maybe a little bit better -- but SRR cleaned out the welterweight and middleweight division for 5 years w/o a loss fighting 50+ times.

Are Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler better opposition than Fullmer, Basilio, Graziano, Randy Turpin, (Armstrong was past-prime)? Tough call.
