    Sonny Liston's most impressive performance...

The thread of Frazier vs Liston got me wondering. What is the most impressive performance you have ever seen of Sonny Liston?

    Liston vs Williams II

Cleveland Williams was in tremendous physical shape he was one of the hardest punching heavyweights who ever lived, hitting one guy so hard he broke the fighters back and the guy had to go around on crutches for the rest of his life. yet Liston butchered him, walking threw Williams bombs and chopping him down with his own devastating punches.

Liston was also good enough to out-box Eddie Machen who was a real good pro fighter, Sonny twice hammered Floyd Patterson in the opening round and KOd Zora Folley in 3rds.

You beat me to the punch here, sonny! I always thought his second fight with Williams was his most impressive. He may not have been throwing blinding-fast combinations... but his punches were incredibly precise. Nearly all were on target, and the big, strong Williams was simple overpowered.

One of his career-defining knockouts against Zora Folley was never filmed. From what I've seen, I agree that it's the Cleveland Williams fights that are his most impressive. The KO's over Patterson may have been more important for his career, but he didn't get to show much due to short endings to both bouts.

The Patterson victories were never all that impressive to me. Liston was just too big and strong for the smaller Patterson.

The Williams fight was very good and it also is a testament to Sonny's chin. He took a couple nasty shots and was unphased.

It really makes me wonder what happened in his fight with Ali. Did he take a dive?

I particularly liked his performance in Ali-Liston II where he flopped about the floor like a fish out of water, then went straight into his dying beetle routine. It's just a shame he didn't receive a Golden Globe nomination.
