Perkins was a good win, but Brown wasn't because he was beyond over the hill.

What you also fail to mention is that most people thought Ortiz beat Locche and it was actually considered a gift draw.

As for Pryor's wins, they were excellent. Everyone thought that Arguello was gonna beat Pryor. Pryor was a significant underdog coming into the fight. And Cervantes wasn't washed-up. He came off of a dominating victory of Miguel Montilla and won his next few fights after Pryor.
Locche lost to Cervantes on a cut when he was closing 34 years of age and barely trained for the fight. Not quite as bad as 31 year old Pryor losing to the very average Bobby Joe Young.

Based on the film I've seen of Carlos Ortiz vs Nicolino Locche, Locche gave Ortiz plenty of problems.

I'd say that calling Pryor a huge underdog going into the Arguello fight is an exaggeration. It was seen as an even fight. In fact Pryor himself stated before the fight that he felt Arguello was over the hill.

Montilla was far from a great fighter who had gone to a close decision loss with old Cervantes although Cervantes performed more impressively in the rematch. Cervantes was competing for WBC FECARBOX titles after the Pryor loss, which is telling of how far he had gone from the form he had showed in the early 1970's, his true prime.

Locche had a little cut. Pryor was addicted to drugs. I think Pryor had a lot more to overcome than Locche.

Locche didn't give Ortiz any serious problems. Serious enough for him to be considered the winner of the fight. It was a gift draw and that's that.

Pryor was a huge underdog. They were bringing Arguello up in hopes that he would fight SRL. That kind of a fighter is expected to just run over the competition on his way up to the megafight.

Did Cervantes or did Cervantes not win a dominating fight over Montilla right before Pryor. And then did he or did he not win his next few bouts?

        Thought so..

Locche protested the stoppage but it's not like he had a choice whether the fight would be stopped or not.

Outside of Ortiz not landing a glove on Locche, yes he didn't give him any serious problems. But this is boxing and you don't win fights by not landing a thing.

There were no talks of Arguello fighting Ray Leonard, that's just silly. Pryor vs Arguello was the big fight. Both men made large paydays, Pryor 1.6 million, Arguello 1.5 million.

Did or did not Benny Leonard win the last 19 fights of his comeback previous to fighting Jimmy McLarnin? No one here's trying to make it look like a career defining win for McLarnin. Benny Leonard was old, Antonio Cervantes too was old. Where was Aaron Pryor when he was 36 years old?

A win over Montilla hardly proves that Cervantes was still a prime force to be reckoned with. Montilla was a local Dominican fighter.

Whether you think Locche was better than Pryor or not, and a solid case can definitely be made that he was as I have done here, it's all besides the point I was trying to make in the first place. Locche is not rated even among the top 80 fighters by the Ring Magazine's trainwreck of a list. Pryor is top 35. A solid case cannot be made that Pryor ranks over Jimmy McLarnin. McLarnin probably had more wins over hall of famers than Pryor did over top 10 ranked contenders.
