    Underrated Big Punchers?

Past or Present. Who do you feel was a underrated puncher?

His power doesn't really get downplayed but one guy who I think doesn't get enough credit for his punch is Roger Mayweather, the dude had so many great one punch KO's in his career.

Rosario is a guy who gets somewhat overlooked but the guy could punch through a brick wall.

I think Sugar Ray Leonard who was not as well known for power as Hearns and Hagler carried more pop than many think. Even Duran in the first fight said he hit me hard but i was too strong for him. I believe it was fast combination with power that made hagler move and get SRL off the ropes in RD 9 of their fight. Jose Luis Ramirez was under the shadow of Chavez. BUt he had 82 KO's and about the same KO percentage as Chavez had. Ramirez even knockdown Arguello and KOD Rosario. But he never gets mentioned as one of thre great punchers.

Leonard was the first guy to come to mind. He had good power, especially in his left hook.

Leonard wasn't a huge puncher or a one-punch guy but he had such great finishing ability it was incredible, his first round blowout of Andy Price was amazing in it's brutality and the fact that he did it against such a defensively and athletically competent fighter was incredible.

As far as Jose Luis Ramirez goes, I remember when Ray Mancini was commentating Ramirez's fight with Whitaker he described him as a very solid puncher who was very strong and I think that is a fair assesment. He has a great KO record but most of those come against unknown commodities so it's hard to really credit him with being a big puncher based solely off of his record. His knockdown of Arguello was really more attributed to his underrated counterpunching ability and his sneaky southpaw left though still impressive seeing as how durable Arguello was. Rosario never had a good chin though it was still impressive.

Azumah Nelson (see: Cowdell, Martinez, Gomez, Suarez)

Freddie Pendleton (see: Mayweather, Trice, Garcia, Lopez)

If Freddie uncorked that right hand on your chin you were generally in a world of hurt. Roger Mayweather found that out the hard way. One of the more brutal knockouts in recent history.

Nelson is known as a great fighter but sometimes gets overlooked when speaking about the great punchers among smaller men. Generally you hear names like Gomez, Carbajal and Zarate...Nelson could **** with the best of them though. The way he nearly tore Pat Cowdell's head off in the first round of their bout was amazing. Vicious uppercut.

Truth be told Nelson's power was really his downfall, he relied more and more on it and we saw less and less of the combinations and diversity of punches he threw in his days at featherweight and more and more of the looping punches that he got away with because of his skills in his early days.

Pendelton is a good shout-out, he was a viscious right hand puncher and he knew how to sneak it in behind his jab.

Tyrone Trice is a guy who doesn't really ever get mentioned relating to his power, put down the very tough and durable Simon Brown in his losing effort in their first fight and his KO of Ron Collins is one of the sickest TKO's out there.

I can't say I disagree with you on the first point. Nelson did show a greater arsenal of punches in his heyday at 126 and early into his 130 days.

Pendleton is one of the more interesting fighters in the last 20-25 years of boxing in my opinion.

I always remember Trice for having those fast hands. I would compare him to Kendall Holt as far as fighters today go. Holt doesn't necessarily have a shiny KO% but he had enough power to hurt some really durable fighters. Trice had far more knockouts on his resume. Collins fight was the infamous Toney call out wasn't it? That poor guy (Collins I think) got blitzed.
