Sam Langford vs James Tiger Smith

As I was searching through some of Sam Langford's record I found this in the description of his fight with James Tiger Smith.

    1907-04-22 Sam Langford 37-6-14

National Sporting Club, Covent Garden, London, United Kingdom L KO 4 20x3

    World Middleweight Title

Can someone explain that to me? Surely, it couldn't have been the real middleweight title.

It was probably for the 'black' championship of the world..
During Langford's repressed era, there were race issues that prevented negro's from fighting for official world titles, so they had no choice but to form their own agenda..
Jack Johnson, one of the few black fighters who'd been allowed to fight for a title, was treated as a virtual outcast by the white supremasists who controlled boxing at the time..

Maybe. But I think they would've put that it was for the 'colored' title in the description. They usually do that.

I still don't have any info on James Tiger Smith, except for the fact that he was born in England and has a record of 1-4. Not sure of what race he was, either.

It was announced as a contest for the Middleweight Championship of England. At the time, Jack Johnson was the Black Heavyweight Champion of the World. Smith was a southpaw.

I just changed it on BoxRec.

Langford never fought for a world title, so i can only assume it's a mis-print.. Where did you get the link?

He got it from BoxRec, BUT like I stated before, I changed it to read "Middleweight Championship of England."

Thanks for the info. I find it weird that it was for a title since he only had one fight before Langford and it was a loss. I guess he must have been a good amateur or the title at stake was just for the benefit of Langford.

Never knew you were an editor on BoxRec. Pretty cool.

Thank you to Malone for helping out, as well. Turns out you were right and it was a misprint.

Just because BoxRec had only 1 bout for Smith before he fought Sam, doesn't mean that that is true. There a lot of bouts that still have to be found and put in. A lot of the bouts that took place will never be put in, it's just impossible to do so, BUT where trying.
