  • How do you decide who is a big puncher

How do you decide who is a big puncher or whether one guy is a bigger puncher than another ?

Mayorga has the power to KO if he catches you but he is such a wild man that he will invariably KO you or you will take advantage of his wild swings and KO him or decision him, then you have guys that have good KO% but they are not whats considered power punches but accumulation punchers that break you down, say Margacheato.

So does it go by how many KO's you have on your record or what you are capable of doing if you land solidly ?

    isnt it obvious?

a puncher is a guy who can take you out with one shot. if a guy has alot of stoppages based on breaking guys down hes a dominant fighter but not necessarily a big puncher.

Few things to take into account I guess, one guy might have a lot of KO's on his record but they are as a result of accumulation and weight of punches rather than one punch KO power.
Depends whether we are talking about great punchers or power punchers I suppose.

        No not really.

Some people will argue that if you have more KO's then no matter how you get the job done the % you have accumulated dictates that you are more capable of taking the opponent out, thus leaving some people with the opinion your a bigger puncher.

There are different types of punchers. A true "puncher" ie: a KO artist, is a guy that can hurt or put away a good calibre fighter with one shot, Hearns, Trinidad, Mayorga, Shavers, Foreman, Jackson, McClellan, Benn, Pacquiao, Darchinyan etc

A heavy handed guy or an accumulation puncher is a fighter who often doesn't hurt guys with one shots, and can sometimes be on the slow side compared to other fighters, but consistently hits them throughout the fight and puts on lots of pressure (often to the body) and breaks them down. Margarito, JCC Sr, Duran, Cotto, LaMotta, Fenech etc

A sharp puncher or a speed puncher is a different type of accumulation puncher, this guy needs to land often to knock you out, but in contrast to the heavy handed pressure type guys who rely on workrate, body punching etc to break the man down, these guys rely on sharp, fast, and accurate shots, more often to the head, and often in fluid combinations to work their guy over. Ali, Taylor, Ray Leonard, James Toney, Holyfield, Mayweather (especially above 130)
