It would have gotten ugly at some point later if that hadn't happened. If both fighters somehow managed to stay in control, it would have ended the same as the first fight, with Tyson losing heart and getting stopped late.

The obsession in some quarters that Tyson set out to quit after the first couple of rounds grows weary.

He flipped coz he's a ****in loon - Plenty of evidence to back the fact the man's nuts but very little to suggest he's a quitter.

Yup. He was being beaten 10 times worse against Douglass and Lewis yet he never quit in those matches either.

              Holyfield probably would've won again.

If not by stoppage, maybe Holyfield opens that cut even more, and wins a technical decision.

Tyson was really bothered by the cut and Holyfield's butting.

Holyfield had the perfect style to beat the Tyson from the late 90s...........a superb chin, great in the clinches at stopping Tyson's percussive rhythm, excellent 12 round stamina coupled with the odd liberty with the rules of the sweet science too.

I've always maintained that the best Tyson beats the best Holyfield, but in 1997 Tyson was a more declined fighter.

Holyfield grew into a smarter fighter in the latter half of the 90s. He wasn't as quick as he had once been, and had been in a lot of tough bouts, but improved in other ways to help make up for some of the things he lost. He put on some weight, the right type of weight, so he was stronger. He was more disciplined and didn't get involved in as many unnecessary exchanges as he had before. He said the stoppage loss to Bowe helped him learn to be more controlled. He was very controlled and smart against Tyson. Clinching a lot, getting into exchanges but not too many, pushing Tyson around, etc..

I have always thought Tyson was overrated. But I don't think he would have quit at that point. It wasn't in his psychological make-up. Most likely he would have been stopped as Holyfield rained blows down on him.

Hi Threadsteeler, I totally agree with your last post. Holyfield 1996/97 was better than Holyfield 1993/95.
