Having recently found this 2003 article I thought it might be worthwhile digging into the Calzaghe - Ottke saga to see if we could tease out some new information and opinions. If possible, let's attempt to avoid using incendiary language such as 'ducked'. For whatever reason, the top two 168lb fighters of the early 2000s couldn't reach an agreement, which is a shame.
I remember Sky Sports pushing quite hard for this fight at one point. Ottke's fights tended to be broadcast on Eurosport but Sky bought the rights to one in an obvious attempt to raise Ottke's profile among the UK audience. Can anyone remember which fight this was?
I am very aware I have a slanted view of this situation from the English language media, does anyone have any German media articles which perhaps give a different view? German fans of Ottke were presumably interested in seeing him face Calzaghe so I would be fascinated to hear from them.
What about Ottke's chances in the fight? Did he have anything in his arsenal to trouble Calzaghe? Was anyone picking him to win if they met?
