From John Broughton we get some deep inspection of the greeks; equipment, tradition, he even quoted Virgil in his promotional material.

Daniel Mendoza brings in the rapier and dagger style. Movement for defense and a hit and don't get hit back gameplan. He is also the inventor of the ticket as we know it and self promotion through inflammatory remarks in the media.

Tom Cribb and Captain Barclay would add the modern training regimen of actually exercising and eating well to prepare for fights.

Bill Fuller brought to the table the idea the mufflers could be used for training beyond instruction and started a sparring academy to perpetuate the idea sparring is good preparation for a fighter who already knows how to fight and just wants to stay sharp.

Without any of them boxing may not be what it is now.

      A great post!

I was unsure whether to put any bare-knuckle fighter in the list but I once watched a superb documentary on Tom so mentioned him in anyway.

Oh I get you, folks will tell you it's not boxing. It's closer to MMA. It's too old, no one saw them fight, the pool of talent was too small, bunch of nonsense.

You don't need to have seen them to understand the historical significance of their career. So even if Cribb sucks by modern standards, imo, he's still an ATG and GOAT candidate. He is that significant. ... and I seriously doubt he would, that dude took boxing seriously, kinda his who thing, in 2025 he'd be serious too. imo.

Or to say that differently, yeah I get saying Mendoza at all of 150 would be a threat to Usyk is like whatever shut up bro, but also, Usyk being Usyk without Mendoza starting Mendoza School is a yeah whatever shut up bro idea too.

On him, I forgot to mention Daniel Mendoza is who first coined "Science" in boxing. No real blending of science and boxing ever actually happened. Science was popular so Mendoza rode that to explain his system and help sell it but in actuality there was no scientists in his gyms or giving him advice in anyway.

Sweet science = Mendoza ... Actually I think it was Don Dunphy who added the "sweet" in like the ... 40s? "lol1: Bron will know and make fun of me for not

It was originally coined in 1813 by British writer and journalist Pierce Egan and then brought into the popular conciousness in the mid-20th century by A.J.Liebling.
