      • I watched a USA telecast from 1990. The opener featured Mike Hunter vs Pinklon Thomas. It wasn't thrilling and Thomas was through at that point but The Bounty Hunter put on a boxing exhibition.
The main event was more fun as the undefeated olympian Anthony Hembrick faced the unknown Booker T. Word. It was funny as Hembrick, who missed the bus at the olympics and lost via bye, entered the ring with a flashy entourage and a choreographed dance routine during the intros, the hot prospect proceeded to get iced by Word in the first round. I remember watching it when I originally recorded it and still remember it exactly as it happened. If I get any time this week I'll upload it to youtube and post it because it is classic!

            John Tate vs Mike Weaver-3/31/80

Tate dominated the first 11 rounds, winning 10 of them by constantly backing up Weaver and beating him to the punch. In the 12th, Weaver stunned tate with a left hook and almost knocked him out. tate recovered to win the 13th, but was staggered by a left again in the 14th. In the 15th round, Weaver was way behind on all three scorecards. With less than a minute to go, he catches tate with a perfect left hook. Tate was out on his feet and stood motionless, as though he was sleeping standing up. weaver then followed with a right uppercut that helped land Tate first first and motionless. With 45 seconds left in the fight, Weaver scored the greatest come from behind ko in Heavyweight Title history, winning the WBA title. Tate was ko'd in his next fight against Trevor Berbick, and was never the same.

              Round 1 Lara

Lara landed a couple of straight lefts early and went to the
              body.

              Round 2 Lara (closer)

Closer round where Lara was active early countering in combo
but some of shots did not get through, toward the end Lara let
Perez come on a bit and go to his body.

              Round 3 Perez (kind)

Thought Perez could of gotten a share of this or the last round so
i gave him the benefit of the doubt here as Lara was less active and
Perez did go to the body and was more consistent in the round

              Round 4 Lara

Perez simply not letting his hands go enough, Lara more active

              Round 5 Lara

              Lara countering in combination

              Round 6 Lara
Lara kept it long this round and landed

              Round 7 Lara

Lara Boxing and landing more punches

              Round 8 Lara

Lara tried harder to dominate this round as he let his hands go more in combination

              Round 9

              Round 10 Lara

Boring fight where Perez did not let his hands go enough and Lara hit a lot of gloves
with his shots despite also getting threw throughout the fight, Lara went to the body
well but still did not show me he had any right hook, Lara to me is all left hand and
cant fight inside, sure he has talent but he does not show much diversity imo, he did
not seem to want to close this fight out either, i mean there were rounds that he
he was not that dominant in when he could/should of been.

              -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carlos Ivan Velasquez (11-0-0) vs Ira Terry (24-2-0)

              Round 1 Velasquez

Landed a few solid shots on Terry this round, also landed
to the body and with hooks uptop.

              Round 2 Velasquez

Velasquez scored well to the body the whole round

              Round 3 Velasquez

Big round for Velasquez as Terry tried to bang it out with
him but he caught the worst of the action as he got hurt in
the round and was being hammered toward the end

Round 4 Velasquez came out and timed Terry over the jab
with a right hand that hurt Terry, Velasquez stepped in and
dropped with an accumaltion of punches and Terry got
              counted out.

Velasquez showed patience early but got more aggressive and threw
caution to the wind as the fight wore on, he did a good job of countering
and he body was very impressive and as landed down stairs consistently
and hurt Terry to the body more than once, Velasquez looks to be a hard
              puncher to.

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eusebio Pedroza vs Rocky Locridge I

One of Lockridge's best performances. He pressured throughout the fight and withstood all 100 of his low blows. The officiating and judging of this fight was a disgrace. I had Lockridge winning 144-141. Harold Lederman had it 144-142 Lockridge. The Panamanian judge gave Lockridge only one round and the South African ref, Stanley Christodulou gave Lockridge only 3 rounds. Not only that, but nearly 100 warning for low blows to Pedroza and he didn't deduct a single point. Just a damn shame.

              • Always knew that Young had been robbed but I never did a score card for it, thought I'd do it even though it's not the most exciting of fights.

Even though Ali was kind of overweight and didn't come in as he usually does, Young really had him figured out here.

                Jimmy Young - Muhammad Ali

                Round 1, 10 - 9

                Round 2, 10 - 9

                Round 3, 10 - 9
This round could of gone either way, Ali was much more offensive then previously and landed some decent punches but it was all in the 2nd half of the fight, Young was much more consistent.

                Round 4, 9 - 10
Ali finally opens up more this round. He starts off dancing and putting together some good combination he out worked Jimmy.
But Jimmy is blocking the large majority of them and is going to Ali's body at every opportunity

                Round 5, 10 - 9
Ali seems to be more happy opening up to Young but his activity has dropped, Young times Ali much better this round and makes him miss many times over, Ali was throwing plenty of hooks but 0 of them seemed to land at all
Young lands plenty of clean punches to the body and head.

                Round 6. 9 - 10
Young didn't do enough to win this round for me, Ali landed a few good clean right hands but Young didn't seemed phased by any of them at all, in the last minute of the round Young tightens up and actually uses the rope-a-dope on Ali and makes him waste energy
last 30 seconds or so Young throws a great 1-2 and spins to put Ali onto the ropes but once there he just throws pitty pat punches at Ali's body.

                Round 7, 10 - 9
Young goes back to jabbing at the mid section perfectly this round, Ali countered him quite early with a straight right but Young fires back with his own and actually makes Ali stumble, not long after Young lands another right which effects Ali again.
Ali tries throwing hooks and uppercuts against Young when he's backed up against the ropes but Young blocks all of them, Young jabs his way out and snaps Ali's head back over and over again, ali tries countering but Young makes him pay with misses.
Ali tries flurrying Young against the ropes at the end of the round but they're all blocked.

                Round 8, 10 - 9
Ali comes out quickly and has Young against the ropes, he throws flurries but yet again they all miss and Young makes him pay with some good punches to the body and jabs.
Ali backs of and then pushes Young back to the ropes and goes to hold but Young starts throwing some monster punches to the body, Young moves away and goes back to work with his jab.

                Round 9, 10 - 9
This round was a jab competition between both fighters, Ali threw the most but as well missed the most, after 2 minutes Young hits him with a big right that sends Ali briefly reeling backwards from which Young goes in to work the body before Ali starts dancing and moves away.
First 2 minutes or so was even but Young clearly won the last minute.

                Round 10, 10 - 9
Both do a good job of making each other miss, Ali goes back to dancing but this time Young goes onto the offensive instead of making Ali lead, he cuts of the ring perfectly and goes to Ali's body again.
Young controlled this round with his pressure.

                Round 11, 10 - 9
Young comes out and starts jabbing Ali, mixing it up between the body and head, Ali takes his time and tries too find an opening he eventually finds one and fires a right hand but Young was just too slick and made him miss.
Ali starts pressing the action now and but just can't hit Young, he goes to clinch and Young rips him too the body again, Young makes Ali pay for this whole round with great jabs and counters.

                Round 12, 10 - 9
Jimmy comes out this round and peppers Ali to the head and body with straight shots from the onset, Ali however is in his tight guard and none of the shots land clean. Ali eventually opens up, but as with the rest of the fight, can’t seem to find Young at all. Young soon starts landing everypunch he throws at Ali is like a punching bag at this point. Soon after landing 12 or so punches Young backs off again and let’s Ali come to him, Ali grazes Young with an over hand right, and Young comes right back and makes him pay with his own.
Ali gets desperate and pick up the pace, he throws poor combinations most of which are missing but he eventually catches Young with a good left hook and later a good right hook that sends him stumbling. 1 Minute left and Ali had a chance to steal but he just didn't do enough to offset the first 2 minutes and his punches were largely ineffective.

                Round 13, 10 - 9
Ali comes out forcing the action and getting Young into the ropes, Young is avoiding all of his punches yet again but Ali pushes him and Young slips outside the ropes yet again, the Referee breaks it up but doesn't decide to count this time.
They go back to the center of the ring but Ali gets Young to the ropes again where Young slips outside but voluntarily and the Ref let's it continue with Ali beating on him while he is hanging outside, both boxers were warned.
Ali starts to get rough this round and is pushing Young around as well as tying him up and elbowing him but Young doesn't seem effected, he starts working Ali to the body and frustrating him with some slick moves, in the last minute they both start landing some good punches on each other but Young is landing much more impressive blows some of which force Ali to hold.
Young dominated the last half of the round so this goes to him.

                Round 14, 10 - 9
Ali is done by now, he has completely no answer for Young's bodywork and whenever Ali managed to hit Young with a jab or right hand Young fired back with his own more effective punches, Young goes in for the kill this round throwing his combinations which send Ali reeling backwards, Ali is hurt and covers up in the corner untill the ref breaks them up from which Ali recovers but is yet again countered with a straight right which snaps Ali's head back and has his own way with him

                Round 15, 10 - 9
Both boxers come out and Ali chases Young back to a corner, Young slips outside to avoid Ali's elbows and such which he's clearly trying to get off, both boxers go back to center of the ring and Ali tries to go to Youngs head but as usual Young just ducks under them, Ali goes to clinch and Young works his body.
Ali is frustrated now and tries even more dirty moves. Last minute and Ali starts to dance and jab which Young counters him for, last 20 seconds and Young comes on hard and landing some good shots.

13 Rounds for Young, 2 for Ali.

                Ali won the UD.

Saw this fight a year ago and I was surprised to see Rubin Carter being interviewed at ringside. Was he out on bail? He didn't get exonerated until 10 years later.

Must have done, I think it's around the time that Ali joined the campaign to get Carter's retrial, he probably pulled a few strings to get Carter out just for the fight.

Good point. Bob Dylan and Ali were his strongest supporters. That year, Carter also appeared in a Dylan movie, so he must have been out on some kind of appeal. I'm currently looking it up to see if I can find an answer. I also thought Young was robbed against Norton.
