Eddie Machen UD10 John Summerlin
This is a great HW scrap, both guys are the same age, but Summerlin had a decent edge in experience and an edge in size. Summerlin looks really awkward, boxing out of a semi-crouch and bending all the way at the waist to weave when on the defensive. Machen starts fast against a fighter known as a fast starter, and both out-boxes and outfighters Summerlin in the early going. Summerlin had a habit (which Machen cures him of) of leaning to his right when jabbing, basically begging to be hit with Machen's best punch, the left hook. Machen oblidges him early in the second and Summerlin has to fight his way out of big trouble. It's true that Machen sticks to his boxing - one of those occasions where a fighter would be praised for remaining conservative if he knocks his man out, but to cautious if his man survivies - but Summerlin still has to ship some bombs and it looks like Machen is just going to run away with it.
But Summerlin boxes back and actually strings together a couple of rounds which I thought was really impressive at the back of almost being KO'd. Dominating on the inside with body shots and in the fight on the outside because of an impressive double jab, Machen has to go on the move to re-take control. It's a good example of defensive organisation birthing offensive superiority as he continues to land meaty hooks whilst dominating once again with his excellent jab. As against Liston, Machen underuses his right. The final peice of the jigsaw puzzle falls into place when Machen stops boxing the ducking, weaving Summerlin and starts using very short punches aimed exlusively at the head whenever he drops into his deep defensive crouch. Summerlin rallies again and looks like he's going to take the ninth on what may have been close scorecards (in reality he already needed the stoppage to win), but Machen catches him again with a peach left hook and Summerlin is nearly stopped once more, barely making it out of the round. Machen presses his advantage in the last without getting untidy.
Both looked tired at the end of the sixth, a reflection on the stiff pace.
MACHEN: 1,2,7,8,9,10
SUMMERLIN: 3,4,6
EVEN: 5
So 6-3-1 Machen.
The offical cards were 7-3 twice and 6-4, all for Summerlin. Had I given the fifth to Summerlin, I guess my card would have matched the ref's.

Round 1 Charles
Louis pressuring and stalking Charles, Charles using his
legs and catching Louis with left hook right hand, he also
landed a early body attack
Round 2 Louis (close)
Not an easy round to score, Louis was not that active but
landed the best punch of the fight, a clean left hook on
Charles.
Round 3 Charles
Charles countering and leading when he has to, particularly
with the left hook to body & head.
Round 4
Another tough round to score, im gonna go for Louis as he
upset
Round 5 Charles
Clear round for Charles as he landed a number of clean
counters on Louis
Round 6 Louis
Both guys languished inside this round but Louis managed
to land his stiff jab this round, he also landed a nice clean left
hook when Charles was pulling out.
Round 7 Louis
Charles started well landing good clean shots but mid round
he stopped working and Louis started to come on landing to
the body and pressing him, Louis finished the better of the two
imo
Round 8 Charles
Charles came back well this round by shooting right hands
counters at Louis and catching him
Round 9 Charles
Charles landed a hard combo on Louis this round, Louis
ralliyed toward the end but most of the round belong to
Charles imo
Round 10 Louis
Both men had a decent round, Charles early, Louis late, however
Louis pressure was decisive he started landing that punishing
jab and short little chopy punches inside, particularly the
uppercut.
Round 11 Charles
clear Charles round
Round 12 Charles
Charles seemed to be renergized this round as he had a bit
more bounce in his step
Round 13 Charles
Charles was incharge most of the way although Joe tried to steal it by
coming on late, however Charles was able to fight him off and keep him
out of the round
Round 14 Charles
Early on Charles potshotted Louis from outside with right hands, he seem to hurt
Louis mid way through the right, could not tell whether i was Louis eye that was
hurting or whether a punch landed that shook Louis, Charles did land an uppercut
and Louis voluntarily seem to want to back up like he was hurt, Charles backed him
up and put the pressure on
Round 15 Charles
Charles showed remarkable fitness, he seemed to get a second wind in round 12 and
never stopped moving and punching the whole fight, Louis's aged reflexes meant he
found it hard to get off first and sustain action,
Louis aged reflexes also made it hard for him to counter Charles who was quicker
and able to counter of get off first from outside, Charles was even able to stay inside
and **** it out with Louis when he had to. Louis jab landed some solid jabs on the
Charles though imo.
In his fight against Brown, Starling pressured Brown throughout and made him miss. Starling was so great at pressuring a fighter and blocking his opponents counters. Starling frustrated Brown for the entire 12 rounds, outlanding Brown 2-1, even though Brown through many more punches. I gave Starling the fight by two points. He won by split decision
His fight against Molinares is the perfect example of why Joe Cortez is the most overrated referee around. Starling was hammering and dominating Molinares until the end of the 6th round. A full second after the bell rang, Molinares hit Marlon with a wicked but illegal right cross, putting the Magic Man to sleep. Instead of admonishing Molinares for hitting after the bell, Cortez counted Marlon out. Molinares won the WBA title that night despite ko'ing his opponent with an illegal punch. 6 months later, Molinares, citing depression, vacated the title. He fought 2 more times in his country, Columbia, getting ko'd both times, before retiring.

More active, scored to the body and scored a few straight lefts to the
head, Davis looks confused with the left handed stance, he was inactive for
the most part, Camacho also scored with the jab.
Round 2 Camacho
Davis is letting Camacho get off first, Camacho is going to Davis's body well. Davis
started to workout the Southpaw stance later in the round by applying more
pressure but he still did too much waiting and got hit with the better punches
Round 3 Camacho
Consistent with jab, went to the body and scored two good straight left
hands, Davis is waiting too much and not applying pressure like you
must against a lefty, he is allowing Camacho to get off first
Round 4 Davis (sympathy round which i originally scored for
Camacho)
Not much happened but i gave it to Camacho on a couple of clean jabs
and left hand towards the end. Davis could of taken this because not
much happened.
Round 5 Camacho (little closer)
More pressure by Davis but he was not that successful landing! Camacho
went to the body hard and scored counter jabs and one straight left hand
Round 6 Camacho ( little closer)
Far too much waiting by Davis, Camacho had a quiet round but still scored
to the body, Davis tried to steal it late.
Round 7 Davis (sympathy)
Lots of pressure and pushing Camacho back
Round 8 Camacho
He controlled the round and scored to the body, he also scored the jab and straight lefts
Round 9 Camacho
He hammered Davis to the body, Davis started okay but let Camacho take
over
Round 10 Camacho
I thought he landed better to the body and Davis let him get off as per usual
I would not have given Davis any rounds but i was feeling generous as it was so one sided, Davis clearly
struggled with the Southpaw stance and its lesson that he should of learned imo. You have to apply pressure
when you Box Southpaw's, he let Camacho get off way too much and tried to Box a Southpaw, which is
the worst thing you can do because they are use to fighting your style. Camacho showed
good ring generalship and scored hard to the body all night long.
