Rocky Marciano. A clear eyed review of facts

    Title bouts:

Walcott KO 13. - Down once and down on points he cane back to KO Walcott late.

Moore KO 9 - Down once, he overcame the old man.

****ell KO -9 In his dressing room after the fight, ****ell said he got a "raw deal." His manager complained that the referee allowed Marciano to headbutt, hit low and punch after the bell.

Charles 15 points, KO 8. He was cut and in the fight he on via KO 8 badly.

LaStarza KO 11. Lastaza was down for a seven-count in round four, Marciano lost the eighth round due to a low blow .1953 Fight of the Year - Ring Magazine; LaStarza was knocked through the ropes before the fight was stopped. Marciano was warned six or seven times for fouls but it seems no points were taken.

Notes: It took Rocky a long time to KO his title competition and he fouled often. He also KO'd Walcott in round in a fight where he caved in and looked to give up in 1 round.

    --------------------------

Now for some of his less than talked about fights, that went 8 rounds or more.

LaStarza win 10 split decision. - I think Rocky was lucky to win this fight. Under New York's supplemental scoring system referee Watson had Marciano winning 9-6, so Marciano was awarded a split decision.

Mogard 10 pts- Mogard was defensive in the bout, but did draw blood from Marciano's nose in the 3rd round, and raised a mouse under his left eye in the 7th round.

Buonvinov 10 KO pts. - Buonvino was floored by a left hook to the jaw for a count of eight in the first round. But he came back to give a very good account of himself before the referee stopped the fight in round ten.

Lowry 10 pts. - "It was Lowry, not Marciano, who was on the verge of scoring an early knockout, stinging Marciano with two terrific rights in the first round and then rocking him with two mighty uppercuts in the second. By the fourth, a staggered Marciano seemed just one punch away from being knocked out. But then, inexplicably, Lowry stopped fighting and retreated into a shell despite warnings from the referee to open up and a cascade of boos from the crowd. To many, it appeared that Lowry was deliberately carrying Marciano. Was foul play afoot? Was Lowry getting paid to lose? Or was he merely tiring? Whatever the reason, a revived Marciano managed to rally in the late rounds even though many of his punches missed their mark or lacked force. On the basis of his aggressiveness and constant punching, Marciano won a unanimous decision from the judges. Most observers felt, however, that Lowry should have won."
Lowry, who earned $2,500 for the fight, denied he threw the fight. "I beat Rocky that night and that’s it," he said. "He changed his strategy in the fifth round and made a fight of it, but I won two of the last six rounds after winning the first four. It was a hometown decision."

Applegate 10 pts. - This was a bruising, crowd-pleasing battle. Marciano won handily enough but failed to even knock down his opponent, who had fought only twice in the previous two years. Applegate's best round was the third, which the referee also took from Marciano because of a low punch. Red landed plenty of good punches, typically in the early parts of rounds, but Marciano almost always came back later to take the play away. Marciano's best round was the sixth. The attendance was 4167 and the gross gate was $7, 6l6

Simmons KO 8 In his book Rocky Marciano: The Rock of His Times, Russell Sullivan wrote: "Marciano was in trouble early before winning—and not before drawing some boos from the Providence crowd for hurling a few low blows." The photo of Rocky showed he had a bad cut, IMO it is worthy of a stoppage. He was also in danger of fouling out, but the ref did not act in Rocky's 's backyard.

Notes: Lots of struggle here. A points call that should have been a loss, and a foul filled fight, and a monster cut. The KO power did not come through at all in many of these fights. I know think Rocky was " Andrew Golota " like with all these low blows.

    Lots more research is needed.
