    Another Look At Robinson

It never hurts to reevaluate you beliefs, does it? We automatically respond with the name Robinson whenever the topic of the GOAT is brought up.

Taking a look at his list of opponents is a first step. Was the resume really as good as it is made out to be? Notice, I am asking a question not making a statement. I recognize a lot of names from early in his career. The names are good, but where were these names in their respective careers? Which stage of their careers did Robinson fight them? I have the impression many of them were smaller fighters than Robinson, and maybe a little long in the tooth as well.

Late in the career Robby had a lot of competition, and there was always Lamotta six times. Fullmer and Basilio were mighty tough customers too. He fought them six times altogether. I am wondering about the welterweight record. Though champions, or former ones, many of his welterweight opponents are semi-obscure here on the forum.

So just how good were Abrams, Zivic, Levine et al when Robinson got to them? Wiki-pedia claims he had fought and beaten every top contender, which sounds like a man doing everything he can to me.

Were these guys actually still viable, or were they only in the top ten for other reasons? How good was Tommy Bell himself?

I found out a long time ago that the quickest way to get an answer you do not know, is to ask someone who does know. That is why I am asking questions here and not trying to tell you anything.

Sensible . Zivic said Robinson was the best, " everything I done he did better"
Zivic was no 3 both times they fought.
    Some stats
    Gavilan no1.
    Docusen no3
    Angott no8
    Castellani no2
    Villemain no8
    Fusari no 3
    Costner no2
    Bell no 1

I didn't really ask what their ratings were, but it is good to know and pretty darned relevant. They sound just fine from their ratings. Of course that does not always mean much in boxing, which is why I ask and bring up the subject in the first place. I know they all had fine reputations as real fighters. I was just wondering if their reputations were in reality passe by the time they faced Robinson.

One fighter we did not mention is Marty Servo. He is underrated and rather obscure, mainly a good slick boxer. I am sure he was not long in tooth when they fought. Servo always felt he had beaten Robinson, and I believe Servo was quite good.
