Power was not the crux of his game. So how does he do stacked up against other heavyweights for pure power?
I believe Holmes was about average for power. I would say Norton punched slightly harder, and he was not a particularly hard puncher either. I would suspect Holmes punched a bit harder than Ezzard Charles.
The things that distinguished Holmes's punching from most others was its cleanliness and accuracy. Like the man he studied under as a sparring partner, if he aimed for your chin he did not hit your forehead. Of course his superior jab set everything up for him.
It does not take an overwhelming power punch to become a great heavyweight champion. It only takes the overall skill set with a merely decent punch, or even less power, and good stamina. Braddock's power may not have been even decent. The power of Holmes was decent, if not a tad better.
As for Holmes ducking a lot of fighters---consider the source. It is only our forum churl having a medical fit, who draws other churls here like blowflies. They want his job, and are putting up a helluva scrap for it.
