How does the Tyson of '96, who won back the titles from Bruno and Seldon and gave Holyfield a tough fight in the first six or seven rounds, compare to the one in the 80's, who is one of the most celebrated fighters in history? And when would you say did he become a shot fighter?

I see you are not a Tyson fan, but you can't deny that he has done a lot for the sport and its popularity. Yes, he has also given it some bad rap. But he was def one of the best boxers of the 80's and 90's.
And I am DEFINITELY NOT a Tyson nuthugger!

Obviously the younger Tyson was better. In his comeback Tyson was much more of a pure brawler than a boxer puncher with any real style o compliment his power. Tyson was not shot after prison, but the layoff and his new training habits certainly affected him negatively. He didn't become shot in my mind until after his suspension following the 2nd Holyfield match. He had simply lost too much time out of his career and by his own admission was strictly a money fighter by then.

For the record I think he was a bit past it post-prison through the Holyfield fights. After that he went down hill in a hurry and was clearly past it. He was shot by the time of the Danny Williams fight.
