I was just looking through Julio Cesar Chavez snr's boxrec record and I found a Tony Lopez. He appeared a deserving challenger for the Mexican with penty of good names on his record like wins over Rocky Lockridge twice, John John Molina twice, Jorge Paez, Larry Lacoursiere and Greg Haugen. I have a lot of interest in Julio Cesar Chavez and was wondering how many of his defences were against deserving contenders like Lopez? Did he often defend against people outside the top 10 of his division or did he regularily seek the best.

Julio Cesar Chavez title defences?

Tony Lopez was past his best although he still wasn't a terrible opponent.
Chavez fought often and didn't always fight against the best opponents but he did face a lot of quality opposition.
For example
Mario Martinez
Ruben Castillo
Roger Mayweather
Rocky Lockridge
Juan LaPorte
Jose Luis Ramirez
Of course he also fought the big names of his era such as Pernell Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor, Edwin Rosario, Hector Camacho. I wouldn't say that he truly avoided anybody.
