i don't really know how to ask these questions, but i will anyway.

where gloves in the past smaller?

a lot of fighters from the past suffered from collie flower ear; did that have to do with the size of the glove?

I've seen fights from the past, and the gloves look tiny.even up to ray leonard's days at welter.

does anyone think it diminishes the rep of the " punching power" of boxers from the past who where considered big punchers if the gloves where smaller?

Wikipedia says that a lot of wrestlers, rugby players, and MMA'ers suffer from the condition, and that could be attributed to grappling.but could it also be because of the pummeling they get with those small gloves?

The gloves were tiny back in the day. The quality was not like we know today either. I know the lower weight classes from the turn of the century fought with 4 oz horse hair gloves. The gloves would often be tampered by the corner before the opening bell to push as much of the padding away from the knuckle area.

    Cauliflower ears:

    1: Gloves
    2: The fights were longer
3: More infighting and rough stuff was allowed.

Here's a pic of Battling Nelson. This from 1910 so he hasn't quite finished his career. He was famed for cauliflowered ears. He was also a vain man so he was almost always pictured from his 'pretty' side. So it is also with this pic where only Bat's less busted ear is visible on his battered head:
