  • Fighters who would go into the ring injured

As we all know, the practice of hiding your injuries and going into a fight less than 100% ended with an era of the past. Up until pretty recently, most fighters would do their best to hide injuries and illnesses that happened before a fight, but now as soon as they stub a toe they postpone a fight 3 months or call the entire thing off. But there used to be a time when a fighter would injure their hand and hide it from all but their cornermen that something wasn't right. Guys like Jim Braddock would go into fights with broken hands just to earn a living. It wasn't uncommon for a fighter to take a fight on two weeks notice with a cold, now most fighters wouldn't even think about doing that.

Who were fighters who would go into a fight no matter what? I'll get us started off by mentioning the obvious choices.

    Jim Braddock
    Rocky Marciano
    Carmen Basilio
    Jack Dempsey
    Jersey Joe Walcott
most of the fighters from the turn of the century through the 1950's.

Larry Holmes went into the Norton fight with a torn left bicep and also fought Roy Williams with bad hands.

Marciano fought several times with a slipped disc.

Muhammad Ali went into the second Liston fight post hernia operation sporting a very sore bruised rib that Jimmy Ellis had badly hurt days before. Ali also had cortisone injections in his hands throughout the seventies.

Holyfield went into the third Bowe fight with a cold.

Naseem Hamed went into the Medina fight with a cold.

Ray Leonard went into the Camacho fight apparently with a sprained/twisted ankle.

And a funny last one!!!!! Mike Tyson once fought with a broken back, was it the Nielsen fight?

Although not exactly injured, Craig Bodzianowski fought for a world Cruiser title with no legs..
In fact, he had well over 30 fights & was never stopped or KO'd!!
The only fights he lost were all DC's to former world champs Robert Daniels, Alfonso Ratliff & James Warring.. 23 of his 31 wins were KOs!!.. Thought the guy deserved a mention.. Unbelieveable, when you think about it...

Floyd Patterson fought the first Ali fight with a back so bad his cornermen had to pop it back into place between rounds. Nowadays they call off fights or quit on their stools over hangnails and assorted boo boos.

PS. I seem to recall Pernell Whitaker and Roy Jones fighting at less than 100% health before.

It's been reported that many of Joe Fraziers opponents entered the ring without a working pulse

Only in the past? Not for all.

Arthur Abraham fought Miranda the second time with a broken rib. Mikkel Kessler fought Calzaghe with a broken hand and Mundine with a bad back. None of these injuries happened during the fight. Both entered the ring injured.

Frazier was blind in one eye fore many fights apparently.

Tyson had bronchitis, gonorrhea (Berbick) and the famous "broken back" (Etienne)

Holyfield was suffering from "HGH-itis" against Moorer in 94' and Bowe in 95'.

Danny Williams won a fight with one arm although I'm not sure if that shoulder was injured before he went into the fight.
