  • Why couldn't Bob Foster be successful as a HW?

I wonder. He had all the tools. The size, the power and as a lhw it should mean he also had a speed advantage over the heavyweights. At least those of Foreman and Buster Mathis mould.

He was unable to put on any extra weight. A natural light heavyweight, despite his lanky frame.

The Terrell fight is very telling, Foster may have been the better boxer and looked good at parts but Terrell's greater size wore him down.

Ali outweighed him by 40+ lbs, Folley by 30+, Frazier simply ran right over him.

Some great LHW's couldn't manage that leap so add Foster to that list. Plus he was unfortunate to attempt it in a very strong HW era.
Wouldn't have liked to have seen him against Foreman

Every other top 10 worthy LHW could get **** done above LHW save Foster. It's why I don't rate Foster in the first half of the top 10. He couldn't compete at Heavyweight because he's over rated. The whole not putting on enough weight argument is somewhat valid, which is why I still rate him in the top 10, as opposed to not in it at all. He fought in a weak LHW era and he lost to like 2 of the top 5 LHWs he fought.

He may be overrated by some, I agree, but being in the second half of the top 10 LHW's isn't bad by any means.

To be fair to him, the Mauro Mina and Doug Jones bouts were early on in his career. I think he was the type of a fighter who hit his prime quite late.

He was also unfortunate to have been the reigning LHW champ while the heavyweight division was close to its best with champions such as Frazier, Foreman and Ali. Few, if any light heavys could have beaten them. Still, he has no notable wins as a heavyweight unlike most other light heavyweights as you pointed out.

His effort against Ali was respectable though, he managed to cut Ali and landed bombs that would have surely affected the 40 lb heavier Ali a lot more had both of them been the same size.
