  • Yaqui Lopez

This guy has to be the best boxer never to win a single title. And even worse, almost all his title attempts ended in close and often controversial losses. Many remember him best for the incredible 14-round war with Matthew Saad Muhammad, a war in which he gave it all but in the end was bombed out by one of boxing's ultimate warriors. He also lost to John Conteh once and Victor Galindez twice, all in tight contests and with razor thin decisions.

Still, Yaqui Lopez can look back at a respectable 61-15 record with 39 knockouts. One funny thing about his nickname is that he is no Yaqui Indian. In fact, he's not even Indian at all. Ever seen a 6'2 Mexican Indian? No such thing.

I agree he was very unlucky not to win a world title, but i disagree with you about the John Conteh fight. That wasn't close and Yaqui Lopez was given a jabbing lesson by John Conteh, who basically beat Yaqui Lopez with one hand.

Don't take any notice of the scorecards, Bob Foster was actually commentating on that fight aswell. and he didn't think it was close either neither did his fellow commentator.

I don't know about the Victor Galindez fights, because i've never em.
Although i think one of there fights is on youtube so i'll probably watch it in a few days, i love watching the Light Heavyweight era of the 70's and early 80's.

      Yaqui Lopez

Was lucky enough to see Yaqui fight Aussie boxing legend Tony Mundine
back in the early 80"s. Tony was a enormous crowd puller. He sold out
every stadium in Australia. It broke the aussie crowds hearts when Yaqui
backed Tony up into a corner and unloaded a barrage of non stop punching
to KO him in just a couple of rounds. I beleive Yaqui was just born in the wrong era.

I thought he was robbed in one of the Galindez fights, he just jabbed the hell out of Victor and it seemed a clear win but it went the other way.
