  • Willie Ritchie vs Mexican Joe Rivers

I said I would upload this fight in the Willard-Dempsey thread. It's a 1913 lightweight title bout between the reigning champion Willie Ritchie, a boxer with quick hands and feet and a fair amount of boxing skill, and the challenger Mexican Joe Rivers, a brawler and a slugger much like many of the great Mexican fighters yet to come.

Ritchie had won his title from Ad Wolgast a year previously, and this would be his first title defense in a reign that didn't last very long (he would go onto lose to Freddie Welsh the year after). Ritchie in his career fought such names as Benny Leonard, Ad Wolgast, Freddie Welsh, Ted 'Kid' Lewis, Johnny Dundee, Jack Britton...

Joe Rivers is mostly known for his controversial title challenge against the former champion Ad Wolgast. He was knocked out cold by Wolgast, but Wolgast himself was knocked out at the same time. The referee Jack Welch, an associate of Wolgast's, lifted the dazed Wolgast onto his feet and counted Rivers out.
