  • History of Catchweight Fights

    All the rage right at the moment is the proposed catchweight fight of Miguel Cotto & Manny Pacquiao. Should it be for the title or not? My first foray into the boxing history forum. Non stop boxing is too much right now.

    I feel like a salmon swimming against a endless crushing wave of ******ity in there.

    I want to ask the history buffs here what your opinion is of the catchweight & other prominent catchweight title fights in history.

    I can only come up with;

    -whitaker vs cesar chavez for welter title @ 145lbs

    -ray leonard vs danny lalonde for the super middle & lightheavy title under 175 & 168. @ 165lbs

    -ray leonard vs tommy hearns 2 for the super middle title under 168lbs @ 163

    -oscar hoya vs bernard hopkins for the middleweight championship @ 158lbs

    -terry norris vs meldrick taylor for the juniormiddle belt @ 150lbs

    Great thread idea.

    Leonard late in his career was the king of abusing catchweights, he really got a lot of slack due to his celebrity.

    I'm interested in the history of catchweights prior to the 80s, as I can't think of any examples offhand.

    SRR fought Joey Maxim for the LHW title coming in at 157.5, in stark contrast to the trend we're seeing today.
