You compared Wepner to Tyson's competition and then started comparing the others to Tyson himself.
The underrating of Tyson's resume, if it is underrated, is due both to unfortunate realities and to understandable objections. Tucker could have been an impressive guy but his career never got off the ground like it should have. Alot of people have a beef with Spinks being a blown up light heavyweight even though I usually don't bring it up. Spinks probably had good reason to duck Tucker. These kinds of things effect the perception od tyson's resume.
I wonder how it would have effected early Tyson's murderous reputation if Spinks had taken that fight and gotten beaten and then Tyson had to face Tucker for the title. Instead of Tyson's signature fight being a 90 second blow out It might have been a 10 round decision over a man that fought him back bravely, although he was obviously outclassed.
i didnt compare others to Tyson, i pointed out first, that his comp was better than George's before he fought Frazier, and i dont think Wepner matches up well in value of Tyson's overall competition. I dont take anything away from Wepner, he was a Rocky giving effort against Ali. But mostly it was a grueling one sided fight with Wepner taking punishment and stepping on Ali's foot while digging a shot to his body. Chuck's gracefull moment in that fight.
I still maintain Frazier was the strongest name on George's resume. I'd put Norton there as well, but unfourtanetly Ken was an easy mark for big punchers, the result was expected. It's all debatable though.
Spinks had every right to fear Tucker, but he took a more attractive offer against Gerry Cooney which offered him 4 million more than he would have been paid for facing Tony. He was stripped of the IBF belt, but was considered a legit linear world champ.

Frazier, Norton, Lyle are tough guys, but do they beat Tyson? i think the other way around
.
Don't forget going 10 rounds with Liston but we can certainly drop Wepner and just say that the difference between them is :
Frazier, Norton and Lyle.
If we were going to have misgiving about Norton because of style differences we would certainly have far greater misgivings about Spinks as a blown up light heavyweight that would be in danger going in there with any hard hitting capable heavyweight. On the other hand, style differences are just a part of Boxing itself (Foreman Norton). Tyson hit his various opponents with alot of body shots, some of them round after round, but Spinks is the only one I ever saw just fold over and collapse from just one of those shots, with the exception of some obscure guy Tyson fought much earlier in his career (his 8th fight or something) who unlike Spinks was hit straight into the ribs.
No wonder boxers were afraid of Liston... His opposition was "average", not to say worse... Anyway couple of good fighters he fought were "murdered" easily by him...
I guess it is absolutely clear who are the three most intimidating fighters of all time... The question is about their order from the "most" to the "least of the most". And i would say, number one is "Big" George. Even Ali was believed to be afraid of him.
The second would be Liston, as it was not only about his staredown but also about his character itself...
And the third would be Tyson. Sometimes when the guys were receiving instructions, as Tyson looked up into his opponents eyes, the last seemed to be ready to **** into his pants...
i just dont see anybody more so than Liston. when fighting foreman you knew what was comming, long looping hooks from both sides. when fighting liston he was much less predictable, liston could ko you with any punch, expecially a jab...
Foreman and Tyson well especially after their big wins..
I mean **** Foreman destroyed the likes of Fraizer, Norton and Chuvalo, guys that gave Ali a hard time, so imagine having to fight him, he is a straight up monster KOing everyone in the early rounds regardless of skill level or guys with some of the greatest chins of all time.
And Mike, I could see that at the time KTFO of spinks and Holmes and your the guy having to fight him right after that might be a scarey thing.
