    toney's loss to roy jones

is it really bcoz of toney's poor conditioning

    or...

a just a case of bad style match-up?

Horrible style match up for Toney.

and it was also prime Jones who I firmly believe no one could have beaten without knocking out.

        I'd say both.

I don't want to take anything away from Jones because I believe he would have won anyway but Toney was in terrible shape. He was gasping for air after throwing about 300 punches even though in previous fights he had landed well over 400 on some of his opponents.

Toney himself said that he only wanted to last the distance. He felt he had nothing by the time he got into the ring and just tried not to get knocked out.

I feel that Jones with his elusiveness would always make Toney look a bit silly though... but it could've been a more competitive fight.

Conditioning was a major factor. It could have been a much closer fight. If it was the Toney that fought Barkley, I'm not sure who I'd pick to win (Jones would still probably have to be favored slightly).

( I need to watch the fight again)

Just gonna say a couple of things though if you throw 500 punches and land a lot of them you will tire less than throwing 300 punches and missing. Also when some people lose they always try and put it down to certain factors that make it sound as though they would perform great on another occassion.

You know you have a big fight coming up you get your conditioning sorted out.

Agreed but it was not the first time Toney had trouble with his weight. Look at his performance against Tiberi for example.

It should only discredit Toney, not the men who beat him. His inconsistency is the reason why I don't rate him very highly.

James' lack of conditioning definitely played a significant role in Roy's win that night.

But prime Roy is also a horrible style matchup for a guy like Toney.

I believe Roy would've given Toney problems no matter how in shape James was whenever they fought.

But had James been in better shape, the fight would've been a hell of a lot more competitive than it was that night.

                  bit of both really

and inshape james would have given roy a much tougher fight, but i think roy may have still clinched it

yeah it really was a terrible style matchup for james

Toney was a shell in that fight. He was slow and missing dreadfully. Reminded me of that fight when i see Oscar getting beat up whilst totally drained.
