  • Khaosai Galaxy, Raul Perez, Orlando Canizales, etc

The fighters listed were top pound for pound fighters in the late 80s and early 90s with a lot of successful title defenses.

Just how good was their competition though? I boxrec'd them and on paper they don't look amazing, but then again neither does Hozumi Hasegawa's unless you are part of the era and realize that they are some decent fighters.

So were they decent? I'm not sure because I wasn't part of the era (or even alive).

Khaosai Galaxy was a native of ****kok, Thailand and was born 1959-05-15. He was a champion kickboxer before turning to boxing. Nicknamed ''The Thai Tyson'' He was WBA Super Flyweight Champion from 1984-11-21 to 1991-12-21, he retired champion. He made 19 defences of his title in one reign, and was only defeated once in 50 fights, early on for the Thailand title, a title he would later later win.

He also was considered one of the hardest punchers of all time, KO/TKO'ing 43of his 49 wins. The 19 defences he made of his title 16 were by KO.Ring Magazine done a list of the 100 hardest punchers and Galaxy was number #19

He was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1999 and remains a national hero in his native Thailand

Yeah the list was done in 2002, the 80 greatest fighters in the 80 years.

To be onest, i think Ring Magazine put Tommy Hearns to low, he was rated number 67th.

Tommy was a 5 weight division champion. Held wins over Pipino Cuevas,Wilfred Benitez,Roberto Duran, and Virgil Hill.

And also beat good/decent fighters in Bruce Curry,Eddie Gazo,Luis Primera,James Shuler,Doug DeWitt, and Dennis Andries and got a draw which he should of won against Ray Leonard.

He was also involed in 2 classic fights which he lost against Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler, but will be remembered as the stuff of legend and they did both get Ring Magazine fight of the year.

Galaxy was more dominet at the one weight (Super Fly) and was a more consistet fighter but weren't fighting the caliber of fighters Tommy was fighting. I could debate all day about it.

I have never done a All Time Great List, but if i did i think Thomas Hearns would be higher than Khaosai Galaxy.

The big criticism about them all is that they didn't fight great competition.

Canizales' best opponents were Kelvin Seabrooks, a highly entertaining fighter with an unimpressive record of wins and losses, Clarence 'Bones' Adams who briefly held the WBA super bantamweight title and Billy Hardy who was a solid bantamweight contender for nearly a decade.

                http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.ph...mweight--1990s

Khaosai Galaxy's biggest wins were over Rafael Orono, former two-time WBC super flyweight champion, Israel Contreras who was a future WBO & WBA bantamweight title holder, Tae Il-Chang who briefly held the IBF super flyweight title, Ellyas Pical the long-reigning IBF SFW title holder, David Griman who went onto hold the WBA title for a brief period of time and Chan Park who held the WBA title and lost a split decision to Zarazoga.

Raul Perez defeated Wilfredo Vasquez, a future long-reigning title holder who won a split decision over Canizales, Miguel Lora the unbeaten long-reigning WBC champion, Gaby Canizales a former WBA title holder and Luis Mendoza the WBA super bantamweight champion.

So overall you'd say they had good competition?

I did somer cross checking of Canizales' competition a few years back, and with the exception of Seabrooks, I had a hard time finding any of his opponents who were listed as a top ten ranked contender by Ring Magazine at the time of the fight. Off the top, I think Hardy may have been the only other one, but that was only in the rematch and on the strength of his original performance against Canizales.

There may have been one other one because my memory isn't so hot, but overall his competition was quite weak as far as so-called "championship" level opponents went.
