Mills never got involved unless he had to.

Mills Lane was a really really good ref. He took control, he was in charge, he let them fight, and he didn't stop fights early. Plus, he was a for real judge.

Even when Tyson bit Holyfield, Mills let it go on...until he bit him again.

Yeah, i gotta give it to Mills Lane.

I can't stand Jose Cortez though. He really is not a good ref.

I like Mills Lane as well. Also Mercante Sr. and Steele (pre Chavez-Taylor).

                  Mills Lane gets my vote.

Larry Hazzard was a good ref but an attention hound. Randy Neuman (heavyweight of the 1970's) was also a good ref. And Joe Cortez is a good ref, but he made for lots of drama when he stopped a fight. He would hug the fighter like he just pulled him out of the way of an oncomming train! His arms would wave back and forth for a full 30 seconds, like he was waving at a plane while lost on an island! But even though I kid around with their respective styles, we're talking about the elite ref's of the game.

Tony Perez stopped fights a little late to some, but to me , he was also a first rate ref.

Steele always tried to do a good, solid, professional job. It seems like he was always tring to live down the Chavez-Taylor stoppage.

I love Smoger. He gives a fighter every possible chance to get back when he's hurt. When Smoger stops a fight, you know the guy is all but done
