At the end of his career former lightweight king Ad Wolgast (aka The Michigan Wildcat) had severely distorted facial features and is renowned for having several experimental plastic procedures done on his face.
I stumbled over this report from boxrec of the fight between Wolgast and Chet Neff from 1916:
"Wolgast "carried off most of the coin at last night's smoker at Dreamland, but the honors went to a young Seattle boy whose name has never been mentioned in record books. Chester Neff, a Seattle youngster, kept several thousand fans in an uproar when he fought the world famous 'Michigan Wildcat' off his feet in four busy rounds of the Austin & Salt main event. Referee Adolph Schacht called the contest a draw, but the former champ was very glad to get back to his corner at the end of those four sessions. With a rude disregard of the great reputation of the visitor, Neff started after the ex-title holder at the first ding of the gong and kept right after him until Referee Schacht separated them at the finish. Wolgast fought in his usual crouch, keeping his face well protected with his arm, but the little local battler peppered away at the Michigan's man's features with such good results that Wolgast had to fight to protect himself." Everett Daily Herald. Wolgast's ears were so badly damaged that he had to have surgery on them by the famous Dr. Palmer, who happened to live in Seattle. Palmer was a specialist for fixing boxers' cauliflower ears and had a thriving business. Wolgast had the cartilage in his ear repaired and a plaster of paris cast placed on it, with instructions to break the cast with a hammer in 10 days. Wolgast then canceled a scheduled Portland, Oregon, bout with Muff Bronson and headed home to Cadillac to recuperate."
