Lots of great or talented heavyweights have never won or had the chance to win the world title. Here's a few that come to mind;
Peter Jackson, Tom Sharkey, Sam Langford, Joe Jeannette, Sam McVey, Harry Wills, Luther McCarty, Young Stribling, George Godfrey (20's and 30's version), Roland LaStraza, Eddie Machen, Zora Folley, Cleveland Williams, Jerry Quarry, Jimmy Young, etc.
That's only a few of the better heavyweight contenders throughout history, but there's been a number of others.Comment

Originally posted by ForemanJerry Quarry, Earnie Shavers and Ken Norton came along at a bad time for them. Norton was given the title by one of the alphabet groups, but I always figured you had to win it in the ring. If not, I could pay someone off and be the champ!Ray Mercer probably should be on this list as well.
s not his fault that Ali didn't follow script by beating Leon Spinks and doing his part of the deal.Norton beat Jimmy Young, which pretty much made him the top dog for the belt. That's good enough for me.Comment
