      I agree, anytime a topic along these lines comes up, there should be an obligatory Sam Langford mention.

          They may not have deserved it, but I would liked to have seen Ray Mercer and Bert Cooper win a title(Not WBO).

            Lots of great or talented heavyweights have never won or had the chance to win the world title. Here's a few that come to mind;

            Peter Jackson, Tom Sharkey, Sam Langford, Joe Jeannette, Sam McVey, Harry Wills, Luther McCarty, Young Stribling, George Godfrey (20's and 30's version), Roland LaStraza, Eddie Machen, Zora Folley, Cleveland Williams, Jerry Quarry, Jimmy Young, etc.

            That's only a few of the better heavyweight contenders throughout history, but there's been a number of others.

Ray Mercer probably should be on this list as well.

                    s not his fault that Ali didn't follow script by beating Leon Spinks and doing his part of the deal.Norton beat Jimmy Young, which pretty much made him the top dog for the belt. That's good enough for me.
