        tyson was a complete idiot

i dont know i just never liked him, he had a real bully mentality which is fine i guess but when he fought a guy who wouldnt be intimidated or pushed around by him (holyfield, douglas) he just had no answer and caved...he didnt really have the heart of a true champion

Yeah he was dumb but when you read this guy's bio and learn about his childhood then it becomes painfully obvious that he never had a chance. I think he's a perfect example of how naive people get put through the wringer in this business.

thats true, the guy grew up tough

but so did many other great champions who had the qualities that tyson lacked...

eg: duran grew up streetfighting in the slums of panama, the child of single mother...his upbringing was just as tumultuous as tysons yet he managed to have a sound head

tysons upbringing doesnt excuse the fact he was a ****ing nutcase

Tyson had already peaked and fallen by then, hard to use those examples. However i believe there is some truth to what you say. I think that basically Cus D'amato was Tyson's heart. "Mike Tyson" was not one man, he was the outcome of a project that was conducted between Cus D'Amato, Teddy Atlas and a young kid from Brooklyn. He once said when he was still young, that anyone his trainers told him he could beat, he believed he could beat. He did have an ironlike durable chin, but his drive (Which is where heart comes from) always came from wanting to please Cus D'amato, and when Cus died, that drive left along with him. After that, Tyson boxed for money fame and women, was used by Don King, and then just dumped when his lack of drive for the sport starting costing him fights, and his invincible reputation.

A parent to guide you makes all the difference in the world; Duran had one. Tyson's only parent died when he was ten years old.

That is not true at all. There were plenty of fighters that had no fear of Mike and still got beat like Tony Tucker, Razor Ruddock, and Francois Botha to name a few. As someone said, I think his heart and drive to win was to win for Cus/Atlas/Rooney. I don't think its a coincidence that after those 3 left his life he just wasn't the same anymore. I also always thought that Mike's best achievement was probably his worst, which was becoming champ at 20 years old. I think that was the worst thing that could have happended for him, especially when the people he trusted most passed away. I think giving the keys to the planet to a 20 year old was just not a good idea. I also have read in interviews that Tyson felt the same way, that he should have been brought along a bit slower. I think if Mike became champ at 25 then things might have ended diufferently.
