Nielsen nearly breaks his record! Says it all really. The best have loses because they fought the best. Sloppiano was an overrated bum who would not even be a sparring partner in 70's.
Nielsen dehydrated severely in that fight. It's very evident and still disturbing when rewatching the footage.
Everybody should look at the vid from the 3 min. mark. Disturbing and frightening.
When I watched the fight back then I was appauled that the fight wasn't stopped before, but I guess everyone wanted little Denmark to have a fighter breaking boxings most mythical record.
In the dressingroom after the fight Nielsen kept falling to the floor like a madman. It was really worrying. It was unbelieveable that the cameras were allowed inside and appauling that none of his seconds or handlers seemed to know what to do. Eventually he was taken to the hospital and thankfully made a full recovery.
** The record ain't really a record, it's a marker to a great legacy.
Interesting how Holmes, DM, Valuev, and Nielson all failed, the manner of their failure that is. Holmes so shot to bits he can't even throw a right hand, DM apparently shot but the Germans could have awarded the win against the bubblegum punching Gonzales if they wanted. Valuev shut out by the sickly white Tyson who had to go to the hospital for observation from multi rope burns on his back after putting on a track meet.
Nielson looks drugged at the start of the tape, waving in the wind. The guy never hits him with much. I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't the case.
The so called record adds to the myth of the Rock, but Savold and Tiger Jack Fox marked up the notion of perfection pretty good even if not getting the nod, which really is the true story of boxing, so many dubious decisions because of illicit judging and poor understandings of scoring a fight.
Like I say, the era might be a little on the weak side, but such fighting character in some great series with great HOFers That Rocky ends up ruling.

I heard about this. Unlucky for him that it had to happen in his 50th fight but I guess it's better for boxing in a way that Rocky's record keeps intact.
I know that other fighters have went longer without a loss and even retired with more wins and no losses but I believe that Rocky is the only one (atleast at heavyweight) to have won 49 fights straight (no draws, no NC's or no decisions) and retire that way.
Lowry and LaStarza may have been robbed against Marciano but we will never truly know.

Any reason as to why he dehydrated so badly in this particular instance?

Lowry thought he was robbed in the first Marciano fight, but conceded Rocky won the rematch fair and square.
Marciano has the best unbeaten and untied final record of any boxer, to my knowledge. Calzaghe is 46-0 if he retires now, Ottke is 34-0 (although many would dispute whether he really was unbeaten), but many of the others - Jimmy Barry, Terry Marsh, Ricardo Lopez, Laszlo Papp - have draws on their records.
