I've just watched two Arguello fights recently. A bit bored on a Saturday night so I pulled out the boxing and went through some Arguello. Anyway, I watched his fights with Escalera and Kobayashi. Now, what got me thinking was this:
There is a staggering difference in the size of their gloves. Unless you've seen these fights and can compare them it is truly hard to explain. I have never noticed the size of gloves in a fight. It is just not something you take any notice of. Nonetheless, in these two fights, I noticed each time the difference. I would have noticed it by themselves in the individual fights, but, watching them together was mind-blowing. If you have these two fights, get them and watch them together to compare the glove sizes.
There is some serious corruption going on in those fights. The first Escalera fight is in PR and I'm sure that after considering Arguello's record they decided that Alfredo would be better served if they wore sparring gloves to lesson the impact and so Alfredo could out-box him with little damage. I am positive that they were at least 16 ounce gloves worn in that fight.
So, I get to the next fight and the gloves are absolutely, freakishly minimal. I mean MMA minimal. Like wearing nothing. Seriously. See, when Kobayashi fought Arguello, he was unbeaten and had knocked out just about every single one of his opponents and so I figure they must have thought that it would benefit the Japanese fighter to have ultra small gloves. He had won by KO just about every single time so it would have to help him right? I think they forgot to look at Arguello's KO record though.
Both of these fights were fought in the other guys home-town of course, which is the only reason I bring up this type of question. If they had been fought in Arguello's home-town or even in America then I doubt we would have seen it, but these were fought in PR and Japan respectively.
Having fought a fair bit I know what it is like to get hit by sparring gloves and fight gloves. There is a big difference. Well, I have never seen any difference this big in a fight. They were so vastly inflated in one and then so vastly minimal in another that it was completely and utterly absurd! You have to see it to believe it! Incredible.
