    Same day weigh-ins...

Anybody know why that policy was abandoned? And what year it stopped?

I'm not sure, but I believe it happened in the aftermath of the Mancini-Kim disaster i.e. in the mid eighties as one of several changes (including the abolishment of the 15 rounds championship distance).

The policy was abandoned to prevent dehydration in fights, which is believed to have had an impact in Kim's death. By weighing in at an earlier time it gives the fighters enough time to re-hydrate. The earlier weigh-in has the sideeffect that middleweigts for example, who weighs in at 160 lbs may weigh significantly more come fight-time.
