The biggest reason I think Ali was underdogged and also the reason for the disrespect he gets today is he didn't fit the mold of what people thought a Heavyweight Champion should be. He was a slick "pretty boy" and people expected the Heavyweight Champions to be destroyers. Still true! I remember reading not that long ago a boxing writer who decried one of the belt holders for winning a fight by decision (I think he was writing about Lewis). He said what HE wanted was a Heavyweight that finished fights standing over the prone bodies of his opponents. In light of that kind of attitude is it any wonder Ali gets the dissrespect he does? That he would be underdogged to that very same kind of destroyer back when he fought? I personally don't share that kind of attitude: I appreciate all styles of fighters (except those that have "John Ruiz" attached to them. It's a shame, but what can you do?

PS. To the gentleman who that Ali was lightyears ahead of Louis. I seriously think you really haven't watched much footage of Louis fight. While I agree with you that Ali was ultimately the greatest Heavyweight ever, ahead of Louis, I don't believe the gap between them is anywhere near as great as you make out.

Agreed. No way Ali is way ahead of Louis. Personally I would have Joe slightly ahead but I can live with it either way.
