Wrong. Braddock was the #1 contender, so he wasn't exactly an unknown. Ali may have been a top prospect, but he looked bad in his last two fights against lesser fighters. -

I'm going by what was listed by the Ring Record Book. And Liston was the crowd favorite in both of the Clay/Ali fights. Next time you watch it listen to the crowd when they introduce them. Clay/Ali was absolutely hated back then.Comment

That's the only time I can remember Liston being cheered. I guess people thought he was going to be the champion for a long time so might as well cheer for him.
Ali was also seen as an arrogant loud mouth who talked like he was the best ever without having done anything and talked trash about others. People wanted to see him get knocked out.
Liston didn't deliver and no one cheered him again.
Braddock vs Baer was probably the bigger upset because Baer was coming off two KO wins over former champions Schmeling and Carnera.
Braddock was pretty much a journeyman who lost some, won some and who had somehow managed to beat a few top contenders. He was brought in to lose and make Baer look good.
