Why Wilfred Benitez is not in the fab 4?

I mean, he has defeated Duran and lost a MD against Hearns and had a good fight against Leonard.

He's even one of the best puertorican fighter of all time.

Why isn't he remembered as the others?

Maybe because fab 5 doesn't sound as good as fab 4 or because he didn't fight Hagler. All the members of the fab 4 fought each other, Benitez only fought 3 of them.

His career was also on the downslide while the others got more and more popular. Benitez was never the same after he lost to Hearns.

Benitez did own Duran and had a good showing against Leonard and Hearns.
He never got any rematches though.

Why is he not in the Fab 4? Who would he replace on the list? Honestly. You could make a better argument for someone like Mike McCallum, and no way he replaces any of the original 4 either.

          Frankly, I'm glad he isn't.

He put on good showings against them, but I found his style boring. He was a pure counterpuncher.

But I would have given him a good shot against Hagler.

When the phrase Fab Four was first coined, Benitez was one of the four welterweights named as it was an amazing time for the division. In time as all the fighters moved up in weight and Hagler replaced him.

              Thanks for the post.

              I had no idea.

I wish we could get another era like that.

Simple. Benitez is not in the Fab 4 because he couldn't replace John, Paul, George or Ringo...

Wilfred simply was not involved in as highly anticipated match as the other four. He was excellent against duran but duran was viewed as damaged goods at the time. The scoring in that fight was atrocious as Wilfred should have won by a bigger margin but duran was always a better draw and I think that swayed the judges to give cholo rounds he did not deserve.

I wish young fans could study when a fighters best years end and when their "picking up the pennies"! To think Holmes walked over Ali without knowing the seperation of years gone by is tough to hear. Duran was his best at 135 up to 47 against Leonard. The same could be said for Leonard by the time he was in with Nunn. etc etc etc...............
I agree that Wilfred never generated any excitment or intrique like the others mentioned did. He often dogged his training camps and was a ****y kid too.
He fought well against Leonard and his skills were obvious but he never took the fight over because it simply not in his dna as a fighter.
Marciano ko'ing Louis is Louis far far past his best, to talk about boxing era's and not know the history of the fighters discussed is a waste of time.
