No,name recognition sells. Tyson vs Tyrell Biggs.(gold medalist) He fought Tyson when he was 15-0.

Ali vs Leon Spinks(gold medalist) He fought Ali when he was 6-0. Name recognition goes a long way.

Sadly and simply, there was money to be made.As been pointed out...if his name was Marvis Smith there would not have been a fight.
I don't believe anyone thought he was really ready to challenge Holmes.
But the sad truth was,he had to get a big payday in before people found out the truth...which was he couldn't fight.

Luckily Chazz Witherspoon hasn't been thrown to the wolves yet.......because of his name.

Was the title actually on the line for the Holmes - Frazier fight? Regardless, he had a marketable name. If you're a part of a famous sucessful boxing family, or you did well at the olympics your gonna get a boost in the pros.

He probably got it because of the reputation of his dad.

marvis was ok he had a few good wins, against former champ James Smith and other fairly decent fighters like Joe Bugner, James Tillis and Jose Ribalta so he wasn't rubbish. He was an ok fighter with a great fighters name.

amateur record of 73-0. according to wiki although i think he lost to James Broad in the amateurs so it might be 73-1. I think he would have made a great cruiserweight but was just not big enough at heavyweight.
