Lamotta was definitely better than Gatti. He wasn't a a great technical boxer in the usual sense but he was skilled in his style no doubt. He was great at cutting the ring off, good at slipping and rolling with punches. Add in that he was very strong physically he could impose his will on many of his opponents and had a pure granite chin. Lamotta is definitely a top 10 middleweight of all time.

Giacobe Lamotta had the best chin in boxing History! He also holds notable wins over Sugar Ray Robinon, Fritzie Zivic, marcel cerdan and laurent dauthville. Gatti comes no where near to this illustrious man. Of course Jake La Motta is an all time great.

Being the first man to beat Robinson in and of itself should cause people to take notice. And what is wrong with "old-school" toughness? This isn't the first time I've seen toughness belittled as a fighting trait. Personally I regard toughness as a virtue in a fighter.

LaMotta fought almost every top contender from welterweight to light heavyweight (Fritzie Zivic, Tommy Bell, Bert Lytell, Jose Basora, future HW contender Bob Satterfield, Holman Williams and Tony Janiro) but he didn't get a title shot until he took a dive against Billy Fox...
He then defeated Marcel Cerdan for the middleweight title (at age 30) and defended it two times (against Dauthuille and Mitri) before losing to Ray Robinson by TKO in their 6th fight (none of their fights before ended as decisively as the last one).
LaMotta was never the same after that brutal loss.
"The Bronx Bull" was in my opinion one of the greatest middleweights of all time while Gatti was never great in any weight class.
LaMotta's best rounds against Robinson.
LaMotta defeats Marcel Cerdan.
Old LaMotta beating up Bob Murphy.
